Softball fingers again Sep18 '03

Every September it’s the same story. I play in a fall softball league here in town, and within the first couple games, I always jam one of my fingers, and not lightly either. Tonight was no different. My pinky finger on my right hand is the victim.

Now, I’m going to describe what happened, so if you have a weak stomach, please do not read on. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

I instantly felt pain in my pinky, then nothing. It was like there was no pinky. It was like bye bye Mr. Pinky.

Right when I caught the softball, I instantly felt pain in my pinky, then nothing. It was like there was no pinky. It was like bye bye Mr. Pinky. I then looked down at my hand, and my pinky was sticking out to the right! It was literally bent and twisted out. It was sticking out in a very strange manner, and I got very nervous.

I grabbed it and pulled it, and it popped out of whatever strange position it was in. I had to snap it back in place. That process did not hurt, but I’m pretty darn sure it’s going to really hurt tomorrow morning.

Then I get home and my Dad tells me that I should get it checked out because if it was in fact sticking out Iike I claimed, he said it could have been damaged, even though I popped it back into place. Whereas it’s normal to jam your finger, it’s not normal for it to have been in that weird position. I don’t even want to remember because it actually makes me nauseous. I almost felt like fainting when I saw it. Almost. It was just for a second.

I’m fine now. I have been icing it and giving it lots of fluids and reading it bedtime stories. It seems to be getting sleepy and may want to go to bed soon – oh wait, that would be ME that is getting sleepy.
