Baseball is baseball and Chicago is Chicago Oct13 '03
This is officially Cubs Week. Why? Well, with a single win either tomorrow or Wednesday, they can enter the World Series for the first time since 1945. I’m sure everyone is sick of hearing that. Especially Sox fans.
Sox fans are funny. They hate the Cubs so much that they absolutely despise them being so far in the playoffs. They don’t want to admit that the Cubs actually have a great team this year. They don’t want to stand by them and cheer them into the World Series. No, they’d rather rub it in Cubs fans faces when the Cubs lose a game, and keep to themselves when the Cubs win a game. All they want to do is see the Cubs fall on their faces. Why all the angst?
Baseball is supposed to be fun, but Sox fans take the fun out of it.
To me, baseball is baseball. It’s great to watch, great to play, and just great to have around. Why can’t Sox fans just sit back and enjoy this trip to the playoffs by a Chicago team? Why must they constantly berate them? It seems no matter how good the Cubs do, Sox fans always have something negative to say.
On the other hand, if the Sox were this far in the playoffs, Cubs fans would not be as cold. They would actively watch the Sox games, cheer them on, and hope for a good Chicago finish. Because, after all, baseball is baseball, and Chicago is Chicago. You may like one team more than the other, but never to the point of hatred. Baseball is supposed to be fun, but Sox fans take the fun out of it.
I’m not saying this applies to all Sox fans – I know many Sox fans who are glad to see the Cubs this far. But it seems like most Sox fans are like this. Most of them shiver with disgust at any mention of the Cubs.
It doesn’t have to be like this. The Sox and Cubs should get along. It shouldn’t be a competition between the north side and the south side. They should be playing side by side. Wouldn’t this make a better baseball city?
