Old resorts in the future Oct15 '04

There are some resorts in Door County, where you can live without television, radio, telephone, and the internet. These places are very quaint and appealing, because they require visitors to "get away" from all the things that they are used to, in normal daily life.

Could you make it a week without a phone? A week without television? A week without the internet?

I find these places interesting, because they are very old–fashioned and peaceful.

Except, even though there are many things that are NOT included in these places – there are still many things that ARE included, such as warm running water, modern plumbing, electricity, and refridgeration.

Why even include those things? Why not have visitors live completely off of hunting, fires for warmth, and ice boxes for refridgeration?

How far back, in time, can we go, before it becomes too hard to live? What is the cutoff year, or "day in age," where we can safely say that all the things that were invented up until that point, are required for "somewhat decent living?"

Every "age" has things that weren’t around in the previous age.

50 years from now

In 50 years, when people stay in such resorts, they will live with things from the previous age, which include all the things from today.

So, strangely enough, they’ll be living with broadband internet connections, high–tech cell phones, microwaves, etc.

Will people believe that they are living frugally, if they have all these things, and not the current things that are with them, at that point in time?

I find it rather humorous to think that people will believe they are living frugally with such devices and technologies. And WE think we are living frugally with modern plumbing, electricity, and refridgeration.
