Casual bystanders Dec17 '04

I love DVD extras. Especially great are the "behind the scenes," shots, taken during the actual filming of the movie. These shots provide an extra glimpse into the set, the characters, and the entire atmosphere.

But what I truly appreciate is seeing the actors – these "larger than life" figures – turn into rather normal, casual bystanders. Just some folks hanging out. You would never know that they posess such great talents.

During the actual movie, we only see these big screen artists in the most pristine conditions. The perfect, glamorous pose. The phenomenal action scene. Even just a simple walk down the street seems to be much more magnificent and "elevated" for anyone on screen.

That’s why they always say, "just like the movies, right?" Because movies, and the characters within them – are bold, sharp, and infallable. This is what makes movies so attractive – they are not like "real life."

But the "behind the scenes," shots ARE "real life."

It’s such a relief to see some actors and actresses ACT NORMAL. Just standing around with their hands in their pockets. Talking. Eating. Laughing. Tripping over their own two feet. Doing normal people things.

During the movie, the job of the directors is to make the actors and actresses appear at their finest, by bringing out all the subtle and distinct qualities and characteristics that make them who they are.

But it’s on the set of "extras" where the true personalities lie.

This is what I watch for. This is what I appreciate.
