Internet is the "way of the future." Really? Jul02 '05
I like Timothy’s rants about technology, and I thought of one of my own.
Here is a common phrase, by an otherwise ill–informed organization, who thinks the internet has just begun:
Our new method will invoke awareness to the internet, as the prime resource/information spot. The internet is going to be the way of the future, and our company believes in that approach right now.
The way of the future? I would stronly suggest that future has already happened all around us – or at the very least, is occuring right now. But please don’t think that it hasn’t happened yet, or we are "still in for things to come."
We are always "in for things to come," as technology and capabilities change – but to be blind to the fact that the internet has not reached it’s full potential is foolish.
For those unaware, the internet has been around (for public consumption) for a decade and a half now – and a lot has changed since the initial days.
There is no reason to think that we are "still waiting" for that "promised time," when the internet will run our lives. It already is.
Also... to extend that further – the internet is no longer the main competetive edge, simply because everyone has an internet presence. And if you don’t have an internet presence (speaking of businesses), then you might as well fold the business now, because there is absolutely no reason not to, at least, have an informational site on the web.
So, when companies think that they are gaining a competitive edge, by having a web site, or web presence – they are only beginning to compete. That is square one.
