Abrupt emails are just rude Aug16 '05
I really can’t stand abrupt emails.
Some people are really lazy, when it comes to email. Either that, or they are so busy, they don’t have more than 10 seconds to formally write a note.
For example, one person (recently) wrote me an email with a subject only, and no email body. So... they wrote a really long sentence in the subject line, and left the email body entirely blank. They do this quite often.
When they actually do write in the email body section - it is all half-formed sentences, with no periods or proper punctuation.
Apparently, they don’t have enough time for these types of things, in order to form a somewhat decent (and presentable) note.
Hey - I don’t mind a quick sentence or two... but at least try to appear that you are somewhat educated, and that you can form a complete sentence, in the correct spot, with proper punctuation.
Leave a signature - even if just a first name
And say who you are! I don’t care if I receive a million emails from you - you should still sign your name at the very end of the email. Email is obviously a very informal way to communicate - but not signing your name is just plain rude.
You may think I am used to getting emails from you - but the truth is, I get emails constantly (as everyone does), so there is never a point where I don’t appreciate a simple signature.
All it has to be is your first name, or even just your initials. That’s it. That’s all I ask for. Two letters. Is that so hard?
If I am not in constant communication with you - then perhaps include your last name, as well.
Take a cue from voice messages
When you call somebody on the phone, and leave a message on their voicemail, do you just start talking in the middle of a sentence?
Voicemail: Please leave your message after the tone.
Person: Did you get that project done? I am looking to talk about that...
No. You start the voice message by saying who you are, and your purpose for calling. And when you are done leaving the message, you don’t just hang up - you say "thank you," and "good bye."
Common sense.
