Netflix background color change unsettling Aug27 '05

I recently noticed that Netflix changed the background color on their site to more closely match the red envelopes that they include their DVD’s in. The color was once a "pure white," and is now a "deep red."

This "deep red" color, on the site, is rather uncomfortable, and unsettling to the eyes.

I snapped a screen shot, just in case the color changes again. You never know.

Their current style sheet specifies a color of #B9090B, for <body>:

This color is a deep, almost "crimson" red. And, as a "solid" color on a web page background - it hurts the eyes.

I much preferred the original white background that Netflix had - especially since I visit the site quite frequently to manage my queue and browse selections. The white background was more "clean," and "open."

Add a texture

The Netflix web developers should consider "toning down" that deep red color, with, perhaps, a texture - such as diagonal lines, or horizontal lines.

So, instead of this solid red:

A texture could be added to "soften" the sheer madness of the color.

Using that same screen shot from above, I’ve "Photoshopped" the texture in, so it can be seen within the context of the entire site layout.

Both versions ease the strain on the eyes.
