Different computer can bring focus back Sep07 '05
Yesterday at work, my computer’s fan went dead, and it had to be taken into the repair shop. Fortunately, I got it back this morning - with a brand new fan. I’m back in business.
For a few hours yesterday, late afternoon, I worked on another computer. Obviously, some of my files were stranded on the fan-less computer, so I had to compromise slightly - by trying to get as much work as I could get done, barring the situation I was in.
I noticed that working on an entirely different computer is like starting from scratch. It’s very helpful, in many ways, because it gets you away from your "comfort zone," and forces you to think about the work that is really important.
Sometimes, while working on the same computer for so long, it’s easy to get distracted into other things, and even become complacent with your job duties.
After all, change is good, when it comes to sitting in front of a computer for eight hours a day.
So, I recommend working on a completely different computer, at least once a month - even if you are limited with your capabilities on that computer. That’s the point. By being limited, we are forced to drown out the distractions, and focus on what’s really important.
Then, when you come back to your normal computer, you will be more focused and inspired.
