Stop naming inanimate objects Oct04 '05

I don’t particularly like when hurricanes are referred to with a human name. I don’t think hurricanes should be named, at all.

We don’t go naming snowstorms, do we? Earthquakes? Why do hurricanes get named, and not any other natural disaster?

Worst of all is when we start referencing a hurricane, by it’s first name only.

So, "Hurricane Katrina," simply becomes "Katrina."

Red Cross billboards, as seen from the highway:

Help Katrina relief efforts.

Help who? What, is a hurricane a person, now? Does it have feelings? Is it a living thing? It’s assumed that everybody is going to know who (or what) Katrina is? I don’t like when things are assumed.

A hurricane is a hurricane. It’s not a "Katrina." Or a "Bob," "Sue," or "Gerald." It’s a hurricane. And, most importantly, it’s gone. An inanimate object that is gone shouldn’t have a name.
