Highway message sign ads Oct25 '05
I appreciate the recent influx of highway message signs, which are electronic signs, displaying the most recent traffic travel times:

However, these signs also display ads, and other non-pertinent information, which only confuses motorists.
Lately, I’ve seen ads for where to purchase an iPass, and cheers for the White Sox: "Go Sox! Two down, two to go!" As much as I’d like a championship in Chicago, I don’t need to read about it on highway message signs.
When approaching the sign, on the road, initially - I see the yellow letters blurred together. This alerts me that there is a message - whether good or bad. As I get closer to the sign, the letters start to form, and I can read what’s on there.
When I arrive near the sign, and can read it clearly - it’s really aggravating to see an ad up there - when I expected a traffic alert.
If there is no pertinent traffic information to display, the sign should remain blank.
It should only be used for emergencies, or traffic alerts.
