Powerbook keyboard combinations Nov12 '05

I’m taking Michelle’s laptop to Minnesota with me, this coming week. She has a Powerbook G4. This will come in handy, for all of my computing-related needs.

While using the Powerbook, I’ve noticed many distinct differences, between that and my desktop G4 - mainly with the keyboard.

Since the keyboard on the Powerbook (and all laptops) is noticeably smaller, and more compact - there are many key that are absent from the lineup.

For example, there is no numeric keypad - which is usually located on the far right side of full-size keyboards.

Most importantly, there is no Home, End, Page Up, and Page Down keys, which are keys I use quite frequently, while browsing the web (I hate dragging the scrollbar - too much strain).

To compensate for this, Apple combines keys together.

On an Apple laptop, if you hit Option + [up arrow], you’ll get the Page Up effect. Same for down arrow - for Page Down. Option + [left arrow] is for Home, and Option + [right arrow] is for End.

Those keys I use frequently, so this is a big help.

F5 and F6

One key that I can’t seem to duplicate on an Apple laptop is the Refresh key, for web browsing - which is typically F5. F5 on the Powerbook defaults to Volume Up. I even tried a keyboard combination, such as Ctrl + F5, but nothing seems to get it off the default process.

I wonder if there’s a setting in the System Preferences, that turns off the Volume Up key from residing on F5’s home. I mean, if you think about it - Volume Up is seriously hogging up that space, which didn’t belong to him in the first place.

How rude.

Also, F6 usually puts focus in the address bar, for Firefox. Nope. Not this time. It’s default is set to num lock, on the Powerbook.

Oh poop.
