Sharing files online - why aren’t you doing it yet?? May22 '06

It seems that although the mechanisms exist, many people still choose to use traditional approaches for sharing files that are too large to email directly.

Whenever someone says to me, "My file is too large to email! Whatever shall I do!?" - I try to suggest online storage, such as Box, DropSend, or StrongSpace - yet people "shy away" from it, like it’s gonna bite them.

So then they choose to burn things to CD’s or DVD’s, and mail them out - which costs time and money.

Now... there are some situations that prevent direct sharing online, of which I’ve been guilty of, lately. Namely, it’s the copyright stuff. Yeah - you just gotta be sure that what you’re sharing is legally yours.

Beyond that, the only other caveat that I can see is security - people believe that posting your files online is far less secure than emailing. Right, and wrong. Many of those online storage services I mentioned above offer an option to "securely share" certain files, by only allowing a person with the proper email address to access them, or to simply have a password-protected page. So... the security is all there.

But people are still weary of it.

I can see why. I’m not arguing. Just wondering why people aren’t quicker to adapt to the means that we have available. Use it, or lose it, is my philosophy. Use the technology that we have. It’s there for a reason.
