MacBook random shutdowns Oct30 '06
This is becoming "old news" in the web community, but I wanted to talk about it anyway, since I own a MacBook.
For those who haven't yet heard, there seems to be an issue (one of many issues) with Apple's MacBook laptop - a computer that's relatively new to the market. It seems they mysteriously shut down whenever they feel the need. Out of nowhere, without warning, they just shut down.
You can imagine how much of a crisis this is, if you have open documents, etc. Your work could simply get "wiped out."
This has caused a minor uproar in the Mac community of devoted Apple fans, who expect the very best from their Mac computers - and they should, for the price that they're paying.
So much of an uproar, that it's gaining headlines in the press, as today's article in the Chicago Tribune illustrates.
There's also a site devoted strictly to unhappy Mac customers that are experiencing the "random shut down" syndrome. Appearing like an anxiety support group online, the site talks of "users affected," and allows you to share your story. Somehow I'm not quite feeling the vibe here.
Perhaps it's because my MacBook has yet to "mysteriously shut down." I've owned it for about four months now.
However, I am not assuming it won't ever happen - so that's why I take precautionary measures like using Box.net, for backing up all of my files. I never leave anything local, especially on a laptop, which could get stolen, just as easily as randomly crashing.
