I've been having the exact same problem.

I've never tried to host a Tumblelog anywhere else besides Dreamhost, so I can't say for sure that they are the problem. However, that "non-editable" A record makes me wonder if a stable Tumblr hosting is even possible.

It turns out there was a conflict on Dreamhost's end. Here's the response from customer support:

Ah, that was a conflict between your custom A record and the same A record that we've got setup here. Since you're pointing the A record away from our system, I went ahead and turned off the hosting for your domain here and that'll get rid of the conflicting A record for you. That'll take a few hours to clear out, but after that you'll be good.

He was right, and I've been good ever since.

Hope you can get yours fixed...

I'm a Dreamhost customer too -- for anyone who wants to move a domain from pointing to Dreamhost hosting to pointing to Tumblr I think the best procedure is:

First, delete the Dreamhost web hosting setup for the domain(you can keep the mail hosting if you want it).

Then, go back to the manage domains page and click "DNS" for that domain. You'll notice there's no A record for www there anymore. Now add in the tumblr IP. I'm trying this on one of mine now.

Dave, that sounds right. If there's no web hosting for the domain, the A record can be modified. I think Dreamhost did this exact thing to rectify my issue.

Ah, I finally got it sorted out today. Dreamhost unfortunately wasn't much help (they said they weren't able to help me with my hosting configuration), but I followed Dave's little tutorial and it worked perfectly.

Thanks a bunch, guys! All the best.

Dave, when you say delete the hosting, do you mean changing it to a parked page, or something like that? Because I see no delete option in the hosting area for my domain. Thanks! I'm still getting used to the dreamhost interface.

Dorian, there should be a delete button directly next to the domain name, under the Domains section of the Dreamhost account panel.
