Msgme.com and SMS integration May25 '07

I was tipped off on Twitter about Msgme.com.

In a nutshell, you create your own personalized keyword ("apples," "oranges," etc.), and people can text that keyword to a mobile number, which returns them a "reply message" of your choosing.

Have you ever seen advertisements that want you to "text your vote in?" This works the same way.

Think of it as Google SMS, but for your own personal data or applications.

I've wished for a service like this for a long time.

Examples

Already I've set up the keyword "matthom," which when text'd to the mobile number 67463, will return a summary of my latest blog post.

You can also create "subscriptions," which send messages to subscribers on a scheduled basis.

This works much like MLB mobile updates, which I've discussed before:

Your Msgme account keeps track of statistics, such as subscribers, hits, and location of your users.

Possible usage

I imagine a service like this will really open up some possibilities for anyone looking to use SMS in their marketing or advertising campaign.

It's also useful for "every day" things, such as information on a the BBQ you are hosting for Memorial Day.

Imagine someone texting the keyword "matthombbq," and automatically receiving a reply message along the lines of:

> Just picked up the brats. Grilling starts in an hour.

Or how about a poll? Let's say you text "matthompoll," and in turn you'll receive the latest poll question, such as:

What month will the Cubs finally get above .500?

A. June
B. July
C. August
D. Never in 2007

You can then text your vote, and have the poll results sent back to you!

The future of SMS

They say the younger generation (today's teenagers) aren't even using email. Email is already "outdated." Since they've been brought up using SMS and instant-message, they have learned to adopt this as a standard.

Technology changes fast, and with the increase of users with mobile devices, SMS is definitely not going anywhere, any time soon.
