Netflix set-top box still streams out-dated titles May20 '08

The new Netflix set-top box is appealing to many who already stream Netflix movies to their PC. Although some don't mind watching movies on their computer, it's much nicer on a standard television. Not to mention, Mac owners are still unable to stream Netflix titles to their computer, so the set-top box gives those users another option.

And it seems people are pleasantly content with the $99 price tag. I know I am.

Let's be clear, though, what Netflix streaming really is. A lot of articles are unintenionally comparing it to Hulu or Apple TV.

Netflix is still based around the DVD release cycle. So you won't be able to keep up with television shows like you can with Hulu or Apple TV, who typically release new episodes a few days (at most) after they actually air on television.

New movies are not available for Netflix streaming, either. Some of the newest "Watch Now" movies on Netflix are sometimes already a year old (from the original DVD release).

Netflix streaming is not (at this point in time) trying to compete with Hulu or Apple TV. Rather, Netflix supplies a vast library of titles from diverse genres. I find it nice to occasionally browse the "Watch Now" titles, and see something I haven't watched in years, or I've always wanted to see, but never got around to renting elsewhere.

Movies never really lose their luster, so even an out-dated library is very appealing to some.

Maybe Netflix will someday break away from the DVD release cycle, but I kind of like it the way it is.

The Netflix set-top box is just that - a box. It doesn't change what Netflix is currently offering for streaming.
