Gifting online: replacing paper greetings with e-media

February 11, 2009 / Filed under: Occasions, Technology, Trends

Is it finally acceptable to send birthday wishes via email? To gift online? This has always been something people have looked upon as being "lazy" or "rude." As if using technology is "taking the easy way out," or "not putting in enough effort."

Over the last few years, I've tried to abandon the notion that I have to buy traditional paper greeting cards for birthdays and special occasions. It seems paper cards are still the "de-facto" way of expressing your wishes. Anything less is considered unacceptable.

Well, I'm tired of paper media and all of it's downfalls:

  1. Requires a trip to the store (unless you order individual cards to be shipped online).
  2. Paper cards are wasteful - people look at them once, then toss them.
  3. To exchange paper media, you have to see the person, or send via snail mail, which takes days.

All of this adds up to using e-media instead. It's less wasteful, doesn't require extra trips to the store, and can be exchanged with anyone, anywhere - instantly.

So, whether or not this approach is considered acceptable, I am going to start doing it from now on - even for close family and friends.
